Bill Davies was born in Helensburgh, NSW in January 1927 and enlisted in the RAN as an Ordinary Seaman on the 18th of July 1946 on a two year engagement. He was the son of William and Myra Davies of Thirroul, near Wollongong NSW and had two older siblings Clarice and Marie. At the time of enlistment Bill was working as a Brickmaker.
Bill trained at HMAS Cerburus followed by a month on the Bathurst Class Corvette HMAS Latrobe which was employed as a training ship based at Cerberus/Flinders Naval Depot. In October 1947 he posted to the Tribal Class Destroyer HMAS Warramunga. Whilst Bill was in Warramunga, the ship deployed to Japan in January 1947 for five months, followed by a tour of the Solomon Islands and New Guinea. Bill was advanced to Able Seaman in June 1947.
In November 1947 the ship was tasked to deploy again to Japan and Bill was posted off to HMAS Kuttabul where he remained until discharging “End of Engagement” in July 1948. His SC notes that post discharge he was living in Parramatta NSW and he was later married to Jean.
Bill Davies passed away in 1990, his body was cremated and his ashes interred in a memorial wall at Laverty’s Funeral Home in Macksville NSW.
