An American sailor, ship's cook Samuel David Siglar was found guilty of involuntary manslaughter and sentenced to three years hard labour and then dishonourable discharge from the US Navy. Siglar was supposed to serve the sentence at the naval prison at Mare Island California. However, on 20 August 1943, Siglar posted into the submarine USS Narwhal and saw active duty until the end of the war. He was 18 at the time of the incident. Siglar died in 2005.
