There is a note on his service record which states: “gratuity of one year’s pay granted to this man’s mother on the ground that though his death was not strictly due to ‘extraordinary exposure’ it was occasioned by the insanitary state of the dock where the man’s ship was lying – an insanitary state quite preventable but allowed by the authorities”.
