ABLE SEAMAN CLIVE RASMUSSEN 2137 RAN
Clive Rasmussen was born in Korumburra Victoria in June 1897 and was a member of the second intake of boys on the Training Ship HMAS Tingira. He was the son of Hans and Lillian Rasmussen of Korumburra Victoria. He was advanced to Boy 2nd Class in July 1913 and posted to the Light Cruiser HMAS Melbourne in November of that year.
Clive would serve on Melbourne until November 1917 during which time the ship took part in operations in German New Guinea, the Atlantic, the Caribbean and North American Station and the North Sea. He returned to Australia in late 1917 for leave before returning to the UK in early 1918 to join the Battle Cruiser HMAS Australia, where he would remain until January 1920.
He was advanced to Ordinary Seaman 2nd Class in June 1914, Ordinary Seaman on his 18th Birthday and Able Seaman just before his 19th birthday. The last two years of his naval career was spent on the Protected Cruiser HMAS Encounter, and the Sloop HMAS Marguerite. He discharged to shore “End of Engagement” on the 13th of June 1922.
Clive returned to Korumburra as a Dairy Farmer, taking over the family property, his father having died in 1921. In 1926 he married Doris Carswell in Richmond Victoria. The couple would have five children, Horace, Norma, Robert Gwyneth and Ian. He would remain on the land for the rest of his working life.
Doris passed away in August 1967 and Clive in August 1978. They were both cremated and their ashes are interred together in a memorial Wall at Leongatha in South Gippsland Victoria.
