OY 2ND CLASS ALBERT FORBES PENNELL 2134 RAN
Albert Pennell was born in Horley Surry England in August 1896 to Albert and Florence Pennell. It appears his family lowered his age by a year so he could apply for entry to the navy as a Boy, as the UK records indicate he was born in the second half of 1896, and he was christened on the 8th of November 1896. The 1901 UK Census indicates that Albert had three younger sisters.
He joined the RAN as a Boy 2nd Class in September 1912 a member of the second intake of boys on HMAS Tingira. Albert was just 5 Feet 2 ¾ Inches tall or 1.59 metres tall on his enlistment. He served in the RAN until the 15th of March 1913 at which time he was discharged “Invalided” to return to the family home in Leichardt Sydney.
Albert Pennell passed away on the 16th of July 1919 at the age of either 22 or 23. He is buried in the Anglican section of Rookwood Cemetery Section 6 Row 4.
