LEADING SEAMAN HAROLD ALEXANDER MURRAY 1772 RAN.
Harold Murray enlisted in the RAN with his twin brother Douglas as a Boy 2nd Class on HMAS Tingira in June 1912. He was the son ofson of Alexander and Edith Murray. He had three older brothers and sisters, a twin brother Harold, and four younger siblings. His older brother Leading Stoker Arthur Clarence Murray 2548 enlisted in January 1913, deserted in November of that year but turned himself in at the outbreak of war serving on Torpedo Boat Destroyers. His twin, Douglas Murray would serve until 1926 reaching the rank of Master at Arms before transferring to the Naval Dockyard Police.
Harold was advanced to Boy 1st Class in March 1913 before joining the Light Cruiser HMAS Melbourne with brother Douglas in May. He was advanced to Ordinary Seaman 2nd Class in May 1913, however he deserted from Melbourne in May 1914. In September 1914 Harold availed himself of an amnesty granted to deserters and turned himself in. He served on the sloops Una and Fantome and the cruisers HMAS Pysche and HMAS Brisbane and was promoted to Able Seaman in July 1916 and to Leading Seaman in 1920. He discharged from the RAN in May 1921.
On leaving the RAN Harold worked as a labourer and in 1927 he married Agnes Roberts in Berowra NSW.
Harold Murray passed away on the 22nd of May 1951, he was cremated, and his ashes interred in the Woronora Wall Of Memories, SERVICES AIF PANEL D-OLDSECTION, Position 0062.
