Private Marine onboard HMS Sirius. Enlisted in the 41st Portsmouth Company on 3 July 1779 and in the years of 1780-83 was serving in the West Indies. Back in Portsmouth in 1785, he was serving on the guard-ship Ardent. On 24 February 1787 Murphy joined Sirius as part of the ship’s marine complement and was discharged on 5 June 1789 from the ship’s books to the Port Jackson detachment. Enlisted in the NSW Corps and, in 1810, Murphy transferred to the NSW Veteran Company.
