Notes

Victorian Naval Forces Certificate of Service (No.27); Williamstown Chronicle Sat 27 Nov 1920, page 3; Enlisted in the RN on 19 Aug 1874 and served in HM ships Royal Adelaide, Sealark, Archilles, and Nelson. Paid off in Melbourne on 31 Oct 1885 as a Chief Petty Officer 1st Class. Joined the Victorian Naval Forces 28 May 1888 and served until joining the RAN. He saw service in the China Campaign of 1900 and awarded the China Medal. Enlisted in the RAN on 01 July 1911 and served in HMAS Parramatta (I) until 6 Sep 1912. He then served at HMAS Cerberus until his discharge. His Victorian and RAN service card give his year of birth as "1859" rather than the "1857" of his RN service record. In addition, the RN and RAN give different places of birth: RN - Banagher, IRL; and the RAN - St. Marys, Orkney Island Scotland.
