ABLE SEAMAN LINDSAY WILLIAM IRVING 1739 RAN. Lindsay Irving was born in Ballarat in June 1896, the son of John and Leah Irving. He enlisted in the RAN as a Boy Seaman 2nd Class on HMAS Tingira on the 1st of June 1912. He was advanced to Boy 1st Class in April 1913 before joining the Battle Cruiser HMAS Australia in October of that year. Lindsay would remain in Australia until December 1918. He was advanced to Ordinary Seaman 2nd Class in November 1923, to Ordinary Seaman in June 1924 and to Able Seaman in November 1915. He would serve in Australia during the New Guinea Campaign and in the North Sea. Lindsay was repatriated to Australia in early 1919 to serve at HMAS Cerberus. He married Rachel Reboulet in Sydney in 1919 and the couple lived at Jervis Bay where Lindsay was serving at the RAN Naval College. He discharged from the RAN in June 1921, Time Expired. The couple lived initially in Ballarat however by 1924 Lindsay was living in Broken Hill and in 1927 a warrant was issued for his arrest for deserting Rachel. In 1942 Lindsay was one of a large group of Broken Hill men who were employed by the Director of Allied Works in the Tocumwal area in southern NSW. This was almost certainly on the large Allied Air Base under construction there at the time. Lindsay Irving was accidentally killed at work in Tocumwal on ANZAC Day in 1942. He is buried in the monumental section of Tocumwal Cemetery.
