Served in Australian Transport Service as a Wireless Operator from 14 June 1915 to 03 May 1918. Most of his duty was spent on Fanning Island. Enlisted RANVR 06 Oct 1932 for 5 years. Promoted to CPO in November 1932. For his wartime service, Hodges was awarded the following medals: British War Medal and the Mercantile Marine Medal.
