Marked run from HMS Nelson & Jul 1888. In Under New Management - Ian Pfennigwerth, Echo Books 2014 P65, it mentions ex naval men ... many were deserters from the Imperial Squadron who gained a free pardon by enlisting in the infant Australian forces. Perhaps this is what William did?
