Born Hobart Tasmania. Enlisted in the RN 24 Feb 1881 into HMS Wolverine and discharged 17 Jan 1882 with rank of Stoker. On the night of the 1881 census, Head was lodged in the depot ship HMS Flora on Ascension Island.
