The Sydney Morning Herald of 22 June 1886 records: “Yesterday's events connected with the celebration of the Queen's jubilee were marked by a distressing occurrence which happened on board H.M.S. Opal at midday, while the vessel was lying off Farm Cove. In the course of a royal salute being fired, one of the seamen met with instantaneous, death, and another was seriously-it is believed mortally-injured in consequence of the charge having prematurely exploded”
