Dickinson was killed at sea as Dorsetshire transitted from Townsville to Cairns. Following an autopsy by the local coroner, his body was allowed to be buried in Cairns Cemetery. As the event happened at sea, the Royal Navy asserted jurisdiction. In June, 19 year old Able Seaman Edwin Dwyer was tried for Dickinson's murder in Hong Kong and acquitted as the evidence was only circumstantial
