Defensively Armed Merchant Ship (DEMS) Gunner. ABLE SEAMAN FREDERICK CLARENCE DENNEHY RANR S3181. Fred Dennehy was born in Sydney on the 11th of August 1918 the only child of Frederick and Catherine Dennehy. At the time Frederick enlisted in the RANR on the 23rd of September 1939 both his parents were deceased. He had previously served in the RANR and was awarded seniority as an Able Seaman back dated to 1938 and he was allocated to be a DEMS Gunner. In March 1940 Fred posted to the SS City of Mobile and later in November 1940 to the Danish ship SS Panama. In late 1941 he posted to the Naval Wireless station in Canberra, which became HMAS Harman in July 1943. In 1941 Fred married Doreen MacClemments in Corowa NSW. The marriage does not appear to be enduring as Doreen does not appear on the Electoral Rolls post War and in 1960 he would remarry. His postings on his SC post 1943 are illegible, however it does record that in 1945 he was posted to HMAS Magnetic in Queensland. He was de-mobilised on the 20th of November 1945. Post war he lived in Waterloo and the La Perouse in Sydney working as a Truck Driver. Able Seaman Frederick Dennehy passed away in Sydney on the 19th of May 1989 aged 71. His body was cremated, and his ashes interred in the Eastern Suburbs Memorial Park, Round Rose Gardens, Garden B19, Position 205.
