Notes

According to the report of Constable James Mortimore of the Water Police, Couch was sailing in a ship's dinghy with Petty Officer Edward Till. As they were making a turn to return to the ship at 4.30 pm just off the north end of Garden Island, a strong gust of wind capsized the boat and both men were thrown into the water. Couch's body was not found until 6.15 am on the 18th floating in the water between Goat Island and the entrance to Berry's Bay. Death was determined to be accidental
