Awarded an MBE for his action on 24 DEC 1944 when the Dutch Sommelsdijk troop ship was torpedoed while preparing for Lingayen landings in Leyte Gulf. Gascoyne was responsible for the rescue of 1,300 USN Construction Battalion troops. Maurice Corrighan was to later be awarded the DSC for his services while onboard Gascoyne. He was commissioning crew Gascoyne, prior to be posted to her he was overseer of corvette construction at Whyalla.
