James Bernard Campbell joined in Fremantle and was sent to HMS King Alfred for 10 weeks training and then joined HMS Enterprise as an Acting Sub Lt. During escort duty to Singapore they picked up 1200 survivors from the sinking of HMS Dorsetshire and HMS Cornwall. He then underwent minesweeper and anti submarine training before joining HMS Kenilworth Castle based out of Londonderry in the battle of the Atlantic and was on board when the ship sunk U744.
I struggle to read what followed but he had a classic start to his career.
James Bernard Campbell rests at Karrakatta in WA. -JH
After he left Kenilworth Castle in UK he returned to Australia for Foreign Service Leave. He then posted to Ceylon, initially at the Stone Frigate Lanka, then the accommodation ship HMS Caradoc, which was an old C Class Cruiser, then to the River Class Destroyer HMS Deveron.
On his return to Australia he very briefly commanded HMAS Burdekin. - Tony Vine
Further to my last, the July 1945 Royal Navy List of officers indicates he was XO of HMS Deveron. - War service commission terminated 17JUL1946. Reappointed to RANVR 17JUL1946 rank as LEUT, promoted LCDR RANVR 31DEC1949. Trans to RANR as LCDR 26APR1950. Appointed LCDR RANVR 12JUL1957. Retired list 03APR1967.
