Records indicate Edward's was last employment by the Admiralty as a Lieutenant 29 DEC 1820 to 29 OCT 1822. He was promoted to Commander 6 AUG 1849. The RN at this time employed officers as required and those not actively employed were on what was called half pay. Promotion based upon seniority continued for these officers.
