Notes

Wooden headstone. According to his service record, Beattie was an assistant engineer on HMS Opal and his age at time of death was actually 24. In the report of the drowning tragedy in the Western Australian Saturday 6 June 1885 page 2, Beattie had gone out with Midshipman Johnson in a small boat to do some fishing when a squall capsized the boat. Johnson was saved but Beattie's body was not recovered until 14 June 1885 on the beach near the Sandpatch. He was buried the next day.
