Battle of Cocos Island.
Raphael Gabriel Hargraves was born in Launceston Tasmania on the 18 Nov 1886, he was the second son of Thomas Hargraves (died 14th Sept 1890) and Mrs Mary Gertrude Cumming (nee Dalton nee Hargraves).
he entered the RAN on the 16 OCT 1913 at the age of 27, He completed his initial training in Cerberus training as a stoker. He was then posted to HMAS SYDNEY.
he was in SYDNEY when the EMDEN action was fought. he continued to serve in SYDNEY being promoted to Leading Stoker May 1917.In Jun 1918 he was prompted to acting Stoker PO and posted to the London depot for Mechanician training. On completion of mechanician training he was posted to CERBERUS. After a short period at CERBERUS he was posted to BRISBANE in January 1920, Australia in April 1921 and finally his old ship SYDNEY in Nov 1921. He then posted to CERBERUS in April 1923.
he married Margret Chase on the 30th Sept 1920 in Melbourne, and they had a daughter Audrey Kendric Hargraves born on the 28 Feb 1921. Tragically he was injured when the motor cycle he was riding was involved in an accident and he later dies of his injuries at Flinders Naval Hospital on the 13 Jun 1925. He is buried in Brighton General Cemetery, Melbourne.
Raphael Gabriel Hargraves served in the RAN as Arthur Kendrick Johnstone this was only discovered on his death. His service card lists him as being born in Bellaghaderin Ireland on the 28 Nov 1890.
