Buttonshaw enlisted in the RN on 02 June 1893 as a Ship's Steward Boy. He rose through the ranks to Ship's Steward and spent the last almost four years on ships on the Australian station. He joined the RAN in October 1912 as part of the Australian Government's agreement with the Admiralty. He served in HMAS Melbourne (I) from Jan 1913-Sep 1917. He discharged on 15 October 1920 as a Victualling Chief Petty Officer and immediately was reemployed in the RANR as a Warrant Victualling Officer. In 1923, he was commissioned as a Supply Officer before becoming a Paymaster Lieutenant in 1925. At the time of his death, he was on the staff of the Director Naval Stores Victualling.
