ABLE SEAMAN STANLEY SKANE W1735 RANR. Stanley Skane was born in Maryborough Victoria in January 1918, the son of Rose Skane, who would marry George Hawdon a member of the AIF in 1919 on his return from Europe. Stanley enlisted in the RANR on the 19th of September 1940 in Melbourne. He trained as a gunnery rate at HMAS Lonsdale and Cerberus, and he was allocated for service as a DEMS Gunner. He served on the merchant ships Toorie, Koolinga, Era, Caradale, and Corio. He was advanced to Able Seaman in August 1941. Stanley was demobilised on the 6th of February 1946. He returned to Victoria, where he married Olive May Ashton. Post war Stanley worked as a Bricklayer and the couple resided in Williamstown where they raised two daughters Michelle and Suzanne. Able Seaman Stanley Stane passed away on the 9th of April 1971 aged 53. He was buried in Templestowe Cemetery and Memorial Gardens, Fitzsimons Lawn, Row 1, Grave 13, along with Olive who passed in 2006.
