DSM for Service onboard Arunta as ERA during operations in Leyte Gulf. Citation: His Majesty the King has been graciously pleased to award the Distinguished Service Medal to Engine Room Artificer Second Class Archibald Hilton Mayger, Royal Australian Navy, for skill, determination and courage while serving in Leyte Gulf operations. In a letter from H.R.H. the Governor General of Australia, ERA II A.Mayger DSM, RAN was advised that the medal would be presented by the Governor of New South Wales, His Excellency Lieutenant General John Northcott C.B., M.V.O., on behalf of His Excellency the Acting Governor-General at Government House, Sydney on 27 February 1947. Someone, NOK, Undertaker etc got fooled by the joke ERA Engineer Rear Admiral and placed it on his headstone
